What people don’t understand about what happened today is that the Justice Department isn’t part of the government it’s part of the executive branch and is led by the Attorney General, which right now is Eric Holder. He’s the on in particular for today’s closing of MegaUpload and related sites.
It’s obvious to me that what people are tripping over most are two things.
1. The 55-year sentence of those arrested is harsh and the exaggerated amount of money the MPAA and RIAA lost because of illegal downloads. It isn’t the particular action of shutting down the site that is the problem. It certainly is going to be the catalyst of something bigger and something that is sure to be a year long struggle for freedomz. Hearings for the SOPA and PIPA bills are on Tuesday (24th).
2. From what I’ve read the reason why the Department of Justice chose today (well, yesterday) to shut down MegaUpload wasn’t apparently planned to be the day after a number of websites chose to blackout in opposition to SOPA and PIPA and that the investigation was ongoing for 2 years, which leads me to believe - bullshit. I personally believe that there was strategy involved, expecting DDoS attacks on their websites allowing it to become fodder for their cause. I don’t think they are lying about the length in which it took them to pull it off, knowing how long these kinds of investigations work. The FBI is part of that executive branch that shut down MegaUpload and to think there aren’t people in that system who know how raids work are retarded.
In the long run there isn’t going to be much to worry about, but I do predict a shit ton of events like this happening throughout the course of the year in which will cause a ripple effect.
tl;dr EVERYTHING IS OKAY!
Here’s a really cute bunny as a reminder of that!
